There are few things more exciting in lacrosse than watching your team execute a fast-paced transition game leading to a goal scoring fast break. With more than 400 wins at Roanoke and plenty of post-season and conference successes, Coach Bill Pilat validates his approach on how to build a fast pace transition game to an effective fast break.
This is accomplished by working small skill stick work ensuring players can catch and throw the ball on the run in game-like situations. From there he builds the basic skills into game-like situations, while putting the players into game pace drills that allow them to practice making quick decisions on the move. During this video, Coach Pilat breaks down how to run drills with half field and full field demonstrations.
Passing Drills
Passing and catching on the move is a critical lacrosse skill all players must master. Most teams use the typical line drills where players run to each other throwing and catching the ball. However, the downside of these drills is that this is not how most balls are thrown or caught in the game.
Being able to catch and throw left and right - either running in a line, weave, V-cutting to the ball, catching then turning up field to feed the ball to the next player in the transition - are key elements to a well-executed clear and fast break. The “Realistic” throwing, catching, and transition drills you’ll learn in this video - to force players to catch/throw in more game-like situations - provides the building block to your transition/fast break game.
Full Field Scramble Drills
Full-field drills put players in situations to quickly find the open player to develop the 4v3 advantage below the restraining line for a quick scoring opportunity. Fast breaks are setup all over the field. Coach Pilat demonstrates multiple variations from the face-off, clearing the ball out of the defensive zone, ground balls, or just 50-50 ball opportunities in the midfield. Every drill demonstrated is very well laid out with lots of touches and great practice tempo. In total, Coach Pilat lays out 11-different drills from stick skill drills to full-field drills going both ways at the same time.

The foundation of a successful lacrosse season begins with quality practice sessions. In this video, Roanoke’s head coach Bill Pilat gives you all access to a sample practice that utilizes his unique “Four Quarters” plan.
Each quarter is broken down to provide a flow that starts with a warm up and progresses to individual skill development, and then onto team development and strategy. Coach Pilat’s 40+ years of successful coaching experience shine through in a practice that is both fun and challenging.
Quarter by Quarter Breakdown
The content of each quarter is important to the flow of the practice; the first quarter involves warm ups, stickwork and getting players mentally engaged to start the practice.
The second quarter is for individual skill development and the third quarter is for team skill development. In this second quarter practice session, Coach Pilat covers a faceoff drill progression. Beginning with repetition and quickness drills this segment progresses to competitive and game-like faceoffs. Your faceoff specialists will greatly benefit from this time to work on developing their technique.
Fourth quarter is used specifically for a team scrimmage with situations along with practicing man up and man down.
Halftime
During the halftime period, Coach Pilat reviews a specific area of the game that may often be neglected. In this practice he covers several scenarios when there is a ground ball near the sideline. This is a great opportunity to cover some of the little things that could end up making a big difference in a live game.
Coach Pilat’s innovative approach to practice is both highly structured and player friendly. Your athletes will know what to expect in each quarter and have a good feel for the timeline of each practice. Each quarter of practice is packed with meaningful coaching points that pertain to all facets of the game. The end result is a well-executed, well-run practice that will have your players ready for their next competition!

Efficient team offense and defense are critical to lacrosse success. In this video, Coach Pilat presents several drills that will allow you to develop both your team offense and defense in alignment with your schemes and philosophies and demonstrates how these drills unfold into a 2-2-2 offense.
Offensively, the first series of drills work on picking concepts, attacking the goal and identifying the open player. These concepts are the framework of the 2-2-2 offense. They force players to make quick decisions and improve skill and speed of play.
Defensively these same drills work on early slides, rotations and recovery. You can tailor the slides and rotations to meet the needs of your defensive scheme.
Coach Pilat has his team demonstrate a high repetition shooting drill plus a passing drill with many movements and real game passing situations. These drills will also assist in merging the skills learned with the actual team offense and defense goals.
There are approximately 10 drills in this video. One highlighted drill is the 6 v 5 drill. This drill has 6 offensive players running the 2-2-2 offense. The defense in this drill plays man to man but must share the offensive player on the crease. This makes for a realistic situation where the defense gets broken down and players on both sides must read and react.
For 40+ years, Roanoke’s Bill Pilat has been a student of the game and worked to perfect drills and strategies in practice to create formidable, competent teams. In this video, Coach Pilat provides the tools to help you guide your team through several drills to develop your defensive package and incorporate the 2-2-2 offense.
